On June 25th, Latino Community Fund’s Alianza Leadership Network is holding their first Youth Summit in Ellensburg, WA. Alianza is the first network of Latino youth and students across WA state who are creating change in their communities.
The Summit is a day-long event for youth and young adults (ages 16-26) to develop leadership skills and learn about important issues that affect our communities. The main themes for this year will be about 2016 elections, and attendees will also hear and talk about climate justice.
“Our vision is to create well educated, prepared and civically-engaged young adults to begin promoting sustainable community-oriented solutions in their local communities. The Alianza Summit is an opportunity to begin this catalyst for positive change in Washington State,” says Oskar Zambrano, the Youth Leadership Organizer at Latino Community Fund. “We’re excited to be part of a youth-led movement that continues to grow in the communities of color.”
“I have been a part of Alianza for more than a year and it has been very empowering,” says Meri Lombera, a 20 year old student at Yakima Valley Community College. “Alianza empowers me to have a broader impact on my community, I used to be shy but I am now able to speak out and have been helping with presentations in different colleges. I think it is important for young people to be involved so that as adults they can take action for issues that they care about.”
Meri, who is passionate about education, immigration, and equal opportunities for all, will be leading a workshop on self-determination and also the closing speech. She is most excited about the discussion groups after each workshop, where people will talk about what they learned and what they’re interested in.
Other speakers include high school student leader Carlos Rojo and Yakima City Councilwoman Carmen Mendez as well as other youth leaders that are doing great work in their communities.
Alianza currently has over 70 students in their network in 25 schools and organizations across Washington State, from high-school to higher education.
